Film Is My Weakness by Jose Villa

Greetings sweet readers,

So, I got an email from a film photography legend and it said “Do you like these pictures?” I almost replied, I like EVERYTHING you do! But I kept my cool and simply stated that yes, I thought they were wonderful. You see, this is what happens to a person when they find the art medium they really love about art. You get goosebumps, cold sweats, and squeals of joy are elicited.  Sometimes I even weep because it seems that’s what I do when I am overly excited about something. This email led me to reevaluate how I feel about the art of wedding photography and the inspiration I share. So get ready for a great ride my friends, I am sure there will be more film in-store for you…. now on to the show.

Jose Villa teamed up with Kate of Flowerwild to create this inspiration shoot for Rouge Magazine (on Jose’s blog here). I am so loving the simple elegant setting with a “less is more” feel.  Jose is an amazing artist and is an equally wonderful person. I had the pleasure to meet him at a wedding where he took a picture of my daughter and husband that I will cherish forever.  It made me think about location, having a location perfectly suited to your wedding doesn’t require a  year’s worth of goodie collecting to make it special and beautiful. Having this inspiration shoot at El Presidio de Santa Barbara proves to me that the location is  paramount. You can have your wedding chock full of props and amazing details uniquely personal to you both, but at the end of the day if the venue has a giant satellite dish in the background of all the pictures it will…. well, it will be a bummer. In the end timeless trumps trinkets every time.

xoxo

River City Gardens by Melissa Brandman

Greetings sweet readers,

Can I just say how much I admire Melissa Brandman ability to capture (oh so beautifully I  might add) the amazing moments between a couple. This wedding between Brittany and John is radiating love. These two are so happy,  they are seriously giddy, and it shows. Los Angeles River Center and Gardens all lit up at night is a stunning backdrop to what I can only imagine was a day filled with love and laughter.

From the Bride:

“My inspiration came from the beautiful colors found in peacock feathers. I’m Jewish and my husband is Croatian.  We decided to have a traditional Jewish ceremony but we wanted to incorporate several Croatian traditions to include his culture.  For example, In a Jewish ceremony, a Kiddush cup is used to drink the wine, but we also used a traditional Croatian Bukara.  Also, during the ceremony the rabbi recites seven blessings.  The rabbi suggested that we ask seven of our closest family and friends to offer their own personal blessing after he recited the Jewish seven blessings.  My husband’s aunt from Bosnia, his godfather, cousin, and grandmother from Serbia shared their personal blessings during the ceremony.  It was beautiful!!

The Los Angeles River Center and Gardens is a magical place to have a wedding.  We didn’t want the standard 4 hour wedding – we wanted to party all night!  We also didn’t want the typical hotel or banquet hall setting.  We wanted something different, something unique.  The LA River Center is an incredible venue.  There is a gorgeous fountain in the middle of the courtyard, the gardens are manicured beautifully, the trees are lit with mini lights, and the buildings are Mission style with beautiful Mexican tile floors.  You also have the venue for 12 hours, you can use 3 separate areas, and there’s an indoor area in case of rain.  I’ve lived in LA my entire life, and both my husband and I have worked at several events in LA, and neither one of us had ever heard of The LA River Center and Gardens.  It’s an amazing find!! Definitely check it out!!!”

Congratulations you two, many happy years!

xoxo

Spring in San Francisco by Wendy K Yalom

Greetings sweet readers,

As a Northern California native I couldn’t help but connect to this engagement session by the amazingly talented Wendy K Yalom. I really admire when a photographer can capture the ‘in between’ and ‘oh so sweet moments’ with a couple. Destinee and Seth are so cute and relaxed together.  Ferry Building Plaza Marketplace is the perfect location for a spring engagement shoot in San Francisco… if you ever visit check out Hog Island Oyster Co….Yum! For now, live vicariously through these photos.

From the Photographer:

“Spring has… kind of unofficially spring in San Francisco with a week of make the East Coast Envious 70 degree sunny days and a city full of bursting cherry blossom trees. Pablo Neruda’s words having been coyly running through my head- I want to do with you what spring does with the cherry trees. With love, sensuality and spring running through the air, it was the ideal week to visit The San Francisco Ferry Building Farmer’s Market with Destinee and Seth for a Madly in Love Portrait Session. Madly in Love portrait session are totally unique to each couple and it was Seth and Destinee’s shared love of great San Francisco food and style that decided the Ferry Building and Hotel Vitale. It is always an honor to capture people in Love and particularly a couple that so radiantly and intentionally prioritizes pleasure and truth. As you enjoy, I hope you are blown open to love as the cherry trees are by the Springtime.”

From the Bride and Groom to be:

“Seth surprised me by showing up at my office on Friday at 6pm (when we were
suppose to meet downtown) in a private car. I thought something was up but
he surprises me occasionally with romantic dates so it could easily been
one of those. The driver headed to the freeway and before I knew it, we
were to the Oakland private airport!

Now I was getting really excited. As we got ready to get into the
helicopter, Seth opened the trunk to reveal packed weekend bags! Unknown to
me, he had cancelled our weekend appointments but left them on the calendar
to help in the surprise.

The helicopter ride took us through the city, over to Golden Gate bridge -
we even went UNDER the bridge, and over to half moon bay. We even spotted a
whale just prior to landing! According to the pilot, that only happens once
every 7-10 years.

We were greeted by a driver from the Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay at the
airport. Of course, now I knew something was up but didn’t know how it was
all going to unfold. Upon arriving at the front desk, they informed us that
our room wasn’t ready for another 30 minutes. I thought that was strange
(this is the Ritz, after all!) and even stranger that Seth wasn’t bothered
at all by it (he expects top notch service).
Seth asked where the beach was and we headed down the pathway to the
private beach.

After walking in circles for a little bit (he told me later he was looking
for a bottle in the sand, but couldn’t find it). he took out a piece of
paper where he had written what he wanted for us in our relationship months
ago. This is one of my favorite notes that I keep by my bedside. He shared
he wanted all these things for us, for the rest of his life and dropped to
his knees and asked me to marry him. I started crying, and crying and said
yes. There were others on the beach that started clapping!

He then pointed to a woman sitting on the beach and revealed that she was
our photographer, who had been capturing the entire thing. I immediately
took off my coat, stopped crying, and we posed for some additional shots on
the beach.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, Seth shared that we had a
oceanfront suite for the entire weekend, with massages the next day, and
club access! When we arrived at our room, there were rose petals, champagne
with chocolate covered strawberries, photos of us in frames throughout the
suite, with one of songs (Daft Punk) playing.

It was a beautiful, romantic weekend and a woman could not ask for a more
elaborate, special engagement.”

Congratulations you two! To see all the sweetness head over to Wendy’s blog here.

xoxo

Lela Rose ‘The Battery’ Wedding Gown

I have been swooning over this dress for a few weeks now and wanted to share. Named ‘The Battery’, this amazing wedding gown is part of Lela Rose‘s Spring 2012 Collection. I love the neckline. My favorite part has to be the back though. Totally STUNNING.
